Alanya
An Alanya cave of stalactites, its humid air long visited for respiratory relief.
Alanya Castle is a Seljuk fortress whose walls run some six and a half kilometres around the peninsula jutting into the sea. It took its present form in the 13th century under Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad.
Within the walls are cisterns, the Süleymaniye Mosque, a covered market and the fabric of the old quarter. From the inner castle the Mediterranean, the town and the Taurus mountains are visible together.
The top of the peninsula can be reached by car, minibus or cable car, the latter departing near Cleopatra Beach. The slope is steep, so walking up takes time and effort.
