Church of St Nicholas
About
The Church of St Nicholas in Demre was built in honour of Nicholas, bishop of Myra in the 4th century. He is regarded in Western culture as the origin of the Santa Claus figure.
The building has been extended and repaired across different periods; inside are remains of frescoes, a mosaic floor and a sarcophagus believed to have held the saint. The church remains an important place of pilgrimage in the Orthodox world.
It is within walking distance of the ancient city of Myra, and the two are usually visited together. The interior is roofed and protected, and a visit does not take long.
